Emery Worldwide (Redwood City, CA), the global heavyweight air- and ocean-cargo transportation subsidiary of CNF Inc., has officially opened its first fully operational service center in Valencia, Spain. Comprising 1,050-m² of modern warehouse and office space, the facility has been opened to capitalize on Valencia's significant business potential, particularly its expanding import and export market.

For the past six years, Emery had operated an automotive customer service department in Valencia to support its pan-European logistics and distribution contracts in the automotive industry.

Emery now will be providing customers with its complete range of international services, including airfreight consolidations, express delivery, customs clearance, and warehousing and logistics management. The company's ocean forwarding services will be provided initially through Emery's already existing Barcelona service center.

The new Valencia facility is located near Manises Airport and is only 15 kilometers from the city's busy seaport. All of Emery's operations in Spain are under its southern Europe division headed by Sergio Urbinati, the company's Milan-based division manager.

According to Urbinati, "Following the success of our automotive customer service operation in Valencia, we undertook a full analysis of the local market to ascertain the potential for Emery's full range of service options within other industries. The findings clearly showed that there was a demand and I am therefore fully confident that this new venture will generate profitable revenues for Emery - Spain and the company as a whole."

In addition to the automotive industry, the other prime industrial and manufacturing activities that Valencia is engaged in include chemicals, engineering, ceramic tile production, fabrics and textiles, telecommunications and shipbuilding. Emery's regular truck feeder services link Valencia with all Spain's major gateways, in addition to a direct connection to/from the company's European air cargo and express hub in Brussels, Belgium.

This hub also operates an overnight cargo flight to and from the United States using Emery's dedicated MD-11 freighter.

Emery has had a presence in Spain since 1972 and operates several offices including agent locations covering Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Bilbao, Las Palmas, Malaga, Vitoria, Zaragoza, Palma de Mallorca, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Alicante.

Robert Zwingmann has been named the company's Valencia general manager, reporting to David Ruiz, Emery's GM–Spain. Zwingmann has over 14 years experience in the forwarding and transportation industry. Since joining Emery in August 1999, he has held several key posts, including route development manager.
